Who Do You Think You Are? ~ I Am Anointed and Sealed by God
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (2 Cor. 1:21-22 NIV, emphasis added)God has an incredible future for you. He has already decided it. It was laid down at the foundation of the earth. All of our days were written in His book before we were conceived.
You saw who you created me to be before I became me!
Before I’d ever seen the light of day,
the number of days you planned for me
were already recorded in your book (Ps. 139:16 TPT).
But we will never find true happiness and security until we discover our identity in Him. He has a lot to say about us. And it’s all good…
Not a single person on this planet has no purpose, no destiny. We were ALL spoken into this earth with unique gifts, talents and abilities. We were born at just the right time in history. You exist now because you are needed for such a time as this (Est. 4:14).
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
(Rom. 11:29 KJV)
The Greek word for “repentance” in this verse is ametamelēta. It means God doesn’t change His mind. His gifts are irrevocable. You have them whether you belong to Him or not. His mind is made up about you.
Isn’t this good news? It should be.
I would like to spend some time developing three salient points arising from our main text in 2 Corinthians. I hope this discussion allows you to see everything you need to accomplish your purpose on this planet has already been placed inside of you. It just needs to be awakened and developed.
1. You are anointed
What does it mean to be anointed? In biblical tradition, anointing was originally placed on the heads of sheep by the shepherd to protect them from lice and other insects that would crawl into their ears and kill the sheep. We see the anointing oil used, particularly in the Old Testament, for the commissioning and sealing of people to offices like that of a prophet, king, priest or builder. In this way, anointing is not just protection. It is also an empowerment and enabling to do the work one was called to.
In the same way, believers in Christ are ALL anointed and sealed with the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:20). We possess unique gifts and talents and we are empowered to fulfil the purposes of God on the earth. How do you tap into your anointing? You surrender to God…completely. The anointing flows through a surrendered heart.
The word “anointed” in 2 Corinthians 1:21 comes from the Greek word chrio which means to anoint or consecrate. Your anointing is a sacred thing, set apart by God for His purpose.
It is important to note that your anointing is not so much for you, but more for the people God wants to touch THROUGH you. This is why it is so important to know who you are in Christ. When you know who you are and what you carry, you can change the world. Only YOU can fulfil your destiny and purpose. The world doesn’t need another Gandhi, another Einstein, another Beyonce…It needs YOU!
The anointing is so important because the Bible says it breaks the yoke.
It shall come to pass in that day
That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder,
And his yoke from your neck,
And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil. (Is. 10:27 NKJV)
What is this yoke? It is bondage, oppression and slavery. It can be negative patterns of thinking, heaviness, depression. You name it. Whatever it is that is holding people back, blinding them from destiny, the anointing is enough to break that bondage off people. You carry something which can set a whole bunch of people free. Do you really want to withhold freedom from others because you are too afraid to step into your purpose? I sincerely hope your answer is, “No”.
If your anointing is from God and He has sealed you, what have you got to lose? Come on…what is the worst thing that can really happen? You are likely to do a heck of a lot more good than harm if you just dare to step into what He has for you. The Holy Spirit is your guide. He will not lead you astray. Trust Him…
2. You belong to God
At the end of the day, you belong to God. He has set His seal of ownership on you. The Greek word for sealed in 2 Corinthians 1:22 comes from the root word sphragizó. This means to set a seal of ownership on. This implies whatever God seals, carries His weight and authority of authorisation. This is literally like a ‘legal signature’. God is saying, “What I have placed in this one is guaranteed. The contents they carry are the real deal.” This means you have His seal of approval. Pretty awesome concept…
Why do we have this? Because we have the Holy Spirit. According to the following passage, He is the down-payment for our inheritance in Christ.
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (Eph. 1:13-14 NIV, emphasis added)
When we realise we belong to Him and He has sealed us with His approval, then we can step into all He has for us.
3. You have a power-pack of potential already inside of you
This truth of ‘belonging’ to God and having His seal upon our lives enables and empowers us to step into the destiny He has called us to. All the ingredients needed to change the world are already in your toolkit. You just need to tap into them. How do you do this? By exercising the power and authority He has already given you.
Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you. (Luke 10:19 AMPC)
Why then are so many believers seemingly powerless? Because they do not realise what they carry. You are dynamite baby! You just don’t realise it yet…
Ephesians 3:20 says:
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us… (NKJV, emphasis added)
This implies that we get what we are willing to exercise. The power is at work in us but it is a muscle. It needs exercising. So work the power!
You have incredible gifts and talents God has placed in you. If you do not know what they are yet, then you need to get into the secret place of prayer and seek God’s face. If you seek Him you will find Him and He will answer you.
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. (Jer. 29:13 NKJV)
He promises to hear and receive you. You will not be turned away.
But everyone my Father has given to me, they will come. And all who come to me, I will embrace and will never turn them away. (John 6:37 TPT)
If you really don’t know where your gifts lie, a good place to start is your desires and interests. After all, godly desires have been placed in you by the Almighty.
[F]or it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. (Phil. 2:13 NKJV)
There is so much potential in you because you were spoken into this earth with a unique call, destiny and purpose. Only you can do what God has put you on this earth to do. You are anointed and empowered to do good works (Phil. 1:6). God has sealed you with His Holy Spirit. You are approved by God. You have unlimited potential inside of you. These are the rivers of living water Jesus refers to in John’s gospel:
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38 NKJV)
If you feel you are not walking in your anointing, then pray this prayer with me:
Father, in the Name of Jesus, I thank You that You have spoken me into this earth with a unique destiny and purpose. You have called me for such a time as this (Est. 4:14). You have not changed Your mind about me–not even for a moment. I repent for not seeing myself the way You see me. I repent for not believing in the gifts and talents You have placed within me. I repent for thinking I am insignificant. Show me my destiny, Lord. I submit myself to Your will and Your way in my life. I ask You to direct me in my purpose. Guide me into all truth. Show me the path set before me. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps. 119:105 NKJV). Give me opportunities every day to share Your goodness with people. Allow Your anointing to flow through me and touch others in my sphere of influence. Give me boldness to walk in all You have for me. I yield myself fully to Your presence in my life. Lord, let Your power flow through me. Let it touch and change people all around me for Your glory. All glory, honour and praise are Yours! Hallelujah and amen!
