We Are Without Excuse ~ The Roman Road

Now we have concluded our “Reflections on Acts”, let’s take a walk down the “Roman Road”. I would like to share with you some nuggets of truth from the book of Romans for the next little while. Romans lays a rich foundation for our understanding of the gospel. You can get so much out of it. Spending a year in Romans would not see you plumb the depths of its treasure! But we will dive into some of it…⠀

We will begin by looking at some truths from Romans 1. We are truly without excuse to reject the gospel. Paul outlines a few reasons why in Romans 1:16-32.⠀

Revealed in creation

God has revealed Himself to us in the marvels of creation, the sacred scriptures and His own Son, Jesus Christ.

“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

Romans 1:19-20 ESV⠀

Believe right, live right

This passage in Romans makes it clear people reject the gospel because they do not honour God or give thanks to Him. They are seduced by the spirit of the age and are “given over” to a debased mind. Once our minds are corrupted, actions follow. Right behaviour flows from right believing. ⠀

There are some very hard truths laid down in Romans 1. (Read them for yourself). They are difficult to read in this postmodern age which has rejected absolute truth. When truth becomes relative, we can just “look inside for our ‘own’ truth”. This is dangerous territory and why some of the Church has found themselves in murky and turbulent waters. We cannot water down the truth because it is inconvenient in an age where “anything goes”. ⠀

You will find most people don’t need to be told they are doing something wrong. Instinctively, they know it as Romans 1:32 indicates.⠀

“Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

Romans 1:32 ESV⠀

Woe to the church or denomination which has become “soft on sin”! The gospel message cannot be watered down because it is more palatable. The gospel is powerful! It changes people from the inside out. Like Paul, I am not ashamed of the gospel. Are you? Drop us a comment…👇🏼⠀

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

Romans 1:16 ESV

We must proclaim truth (in love) and stand firm in the face of growing hostility and opposition to truth. We are all without excuse…
