Put Your Armour Back On ~ Reflections from Acts

I encourage you to read the story of Peter’s escape from King Herod in Acts 12. It is a glorious tale of deliverance by the hand of God! What I want to focus on today was what the angel instructed Peter to do in order to be free of the prison he was in. I believe there are spiritual keys of deliverance for us here too.⠀

Be Constant in Prayer

The first point I want to make is to be constant in prayer. Prayer without ceasing does not mean we are just speaking to God all the time. It implies we are in constant fellowship and communion with Him. This is part of the mystical union we enter into with Christ as His Body in the earth. Intercessory prayer was happening for Peter while he was in prison and this prayer shifted the circumstances and sent angels on assignment. Prayer is powerful!

“So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent prayer for him was persistently made to God by the church (assembly).”

You Can Rest in the Storm

Secondly, he was sound asleep when the angel found him. Talk about peace amidst the storm! Jesus had slept through a storm and now Peter had learned to press into peace at the darkest moment and rest in God. He was so asleep the angel had to strike him to wake him!

“Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands.”

We Must Wear Our Armour

Finally, the angel gave him instructions on how to clothe himself so they could leave. Just as Peter “girded himself” we must also be sure we are wearing our armour. We have the belt of Truth which holds everything together and the Truth is we are free indeed (John 8:36!) We also have the shoes of peace. We must always advance in peace, not conflict. And we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. This is the path of freedom and deliverance.⠀

“Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.”
