Prophets Warn ~ Reflections from Acts

Prophets had an integral part to play in the Acts of the Apostles. Unless you are a cessationist (I am not), then the Acts of the Apostles are for Spirit-filled believers today.⠀

In Acts 21 we see another picture of prophets in action. On this occasion, they are warning Paul not to go to Jerusalem.⠀

“While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”⠀

Acts 21:10-14 ESV⠀

If you keep reading the chapter and the remainder of the book you will see this is exactly what happens to Paul. Part of the role of a prophet is to warn. After all, God does nothing on the earth unless He reveals it first to His servants the prophets.⠀

“For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.” ⠀

Amos 3:7 ESV⠀

Now clearly Paul determines to go to Jerusalem anyway despite the warning because he is prepared to die for Jesus Christ. We know from history this eventually happens in Rome either in AD 64 or 67 under the reign of Emperor Nero. This tells me the role of a prophet to warn does not mean they have any agency in the decision of the recipient of the word. Each of us must be led by the Spirit above all. However, they had given their word and their job was done. Prophecy must be weighed by others. I’m sure Paul took into account what was said and went anyway led by the Spirit because His time had come. Who knows? We don’t…But let us not forget a hallmark of a true prophet is to warn.⠀
